Plea to call NHS Direct

PEOPLE are being encouraged to use out-of-hours health care and NHS Direct rather than visiting the hospital.

It comes as health services are being put under strain due to patient numbers.

The problem has so far been limited to hospitals in the north of the county, but the NHS has repeated its advice for patients across the county.

Mark Driver, director of strategy for NHS Northamptonshire, said: "There is considerable pressure across the health care economy locally and I would urge people only to use A&E in the event of a life-threatening or critical situation."

The out-of-hours service can be accessed by phoning 03336 664664 while NHS Direct can be contacted by calling 0845 4647.
