AN UNDERGROUND explosion in Daventry’s New Street has knocked out power to around half the town centre.

The explosion at around 4pm was caused by a faulty underground electrical cable close to the Tesco goods entrance, and blew several stone slabs out of the pavement.

For some the explosion caused only a momentary cut in power, but for around half the town centre it completely cut them off.

Motorists are warned that the traffic lights along New Street are currently not working.

Electrical engineers are on the scene and are hoping to reconnect the power by 6pm.

This is the third underground electrical explosion along a short stretch of New Street within the past few years.
