Partnership tackles drugs in day of action

Drugs awareness will be the focus for a day of community safety activities in the Southbrook area of Daventry next week.

A day of action is taking place in the area on Wednesday, 5 February and will include a number of activities aimed at raising awareness of drugs use and its consequences.

A drop-in advice centre will be available for parents and young people with any questions or concerns about drugs; members of drugs and alcohol advice charity CAN will also be on hand to talk through any issues.

Other activities during the day include a community litter pick and a mobile police station will be situated at Hood Road from 2pm until 7pm where residents can discuss any concerns about anti-social behaviour.

The Day of Action has been organised by Daventry District and South Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership and follows on from the success of similar events at New Street Recreation Ground in October and The Hollows in August. Concerns raised by residents at those events resulted in actions including improvements to fencing of nearby properties at the Hollows and regular monitoring of the sites to pre-empt any crime and anti-social behaviour issues.

Cllr Alan Hills, Vice Chair of the Daventry District and South Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership, said: “The Day of Action at Southbrook is an opportunity for local people to discuss any concerns they have about anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhood as well as finding out more about some of the community safety issues that partners, such as the Council and police, are working to address.

“This is the third Day of Action that has been staged in Daventry since the summer and previous events have been very well received in the local community – I am confident this event will be too and encourage residents to get involved.”

The Community Safety Partnership brings together partners including Daventry District Council, South Northamptonshire Council, Northamptonshire Police, Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service, Northamptonshire County Council, NHS Northamptonshire and housing associations to reduce crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour within the community.
