Parish poll on cards over wardens cash
A campaigner has said he will call a parish poll if residents of Daventry alone are left to shoulder the cost of the town centre wardens.
Former district councillor Colin Poole has set up RAW Deal (Residents Against Warden Deal) to stop the cost of the wardens being passed from the businesses to the residents of Daventry. The wardens were set up under the town centre business improvement district, but with traders failing to back renewing the scheme, the funding will run out at the end of March.
Previously business owners had appealed to Daventry Town Council to take on the wardens, as the council already runs the CCTV network.
Mr Poole said: “People who live in Daventry and pay council tax already pay for the police. Why should the residents of the town pay for wardens which benefit the businesses? We do not want to be paying twice for security.
“The town council is studying taking on the wardens. I have said if the council ends up trying to pass the bill onto residents I will call a poll for all voters in the town to have their say on the matter of paying twice for policing.
“The new police commissioner had ‘made savings’ of £6.5 million, so surely there’s some cash for a few extra officers to patrol the town centre?”
