THREE workers who challenged themselves to cycle from Paris to Daventry returned victorious last week.

Steve Battenti, 49, Michael Fearnhead, 37, and Andrew Harrison, 27, all work at the Tesco Distribution Centre in Daventry and challenged themselves to cycle more than 300 miles across two countries to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

After five days’ cycling they arrived back in town for the launch of the national campaign, Stand Up To Cancer.

Mr Harrison said: “The three of us are charity champions at the centre and we thought what better way is there of leading a fundrasing campaign than leading by example.

“Of course the cycle was tough, especially the last bit, but it was really enjoyable and we exceeded our £3,000 target.”

The team raised a total of £3,257 from the cycle as well as hitting some personal targets.

Mr Battenti lost 7.5-stone in preparation for the challenge and Mr Fearnhead quit smoking.

The challenge was doubly as tough as Mr Fearnhead said he had not ridden a bike in 15 years prior to training for the cycle.

Mr Fearnhead said: “I knew I had to stop smoking if I wanted to complete the challenge.

“I became breathless and since quitting I can now breathe more easily. I am determined to keep off the cigarettes now.”

Mr Harrison added: “We underestimated how hard the cycle would be but we had the help of Richard Griffiths, tour director.”

The fundraising by the men will help support research into improving the early diagnosis and detection of cancer.
