New marina approved
A NEW marina in the Daventry district has been given the go-ahead.
At a Daventry District Council planning meeting last Wednesday, councillors approved plans for the marina to be built near Yelvertoft.
It will be on land at Flint Hill Farm, in the High Street, with access to the Grand Union Canal. The plan includes 150 non-residential moorings and a new building for office space, toilets and showers.
A planning agent, speaking at the meting on behalf of the applicants, said: “I consider this a great opportunity for a most attractive marina based at the site.
“British Waterways has identified the need for more off line moorings nationally and this will go a long way to resolving the problems.”
The approval came despite the council receiving objections from ramblers and 10 letters of complaint about the application.
Concerns included an increase of traffic in the village posing a risk to pedestrians, doubts as to whether there was a need for more boat berths as other nearby marinas currently had vacancies and that the development would be a further intrusion into the open countryside and would have an adverse impact.
As part of the application, the marina will support wildlife with wetlands and breeding and spawning ponds.
No timescale has yet been put on when work on the marina is likely to start.
