DAVENTRY’S new university technical college (UTC) is going up fast.

Steelwork for the college has been going up on land off Ashby Road over the past days.

Shepherd Construction, the nationally-renowned contractor building the flagship new facility, which is designed to be of importance to the whole region rather than just the town or county.

The college is one of only 13 currently under construction in the country.

Ground was broken on the site in October and in September the new building will open its doors to its first 120 students, and will eventually provide places to 600 youngsters aged 14 to 19.

The curriculum has been drawn up with help from major employers in the Daventry area – including Cummins and DHL – and is focused on engineering, new technology and environmental sustainability.

If oversubscribed places at the college will be allocated to applicants on the basis of geography, with certain percentages reserved for people living further away.

Playing fields will be shared with the neighbouring Parker E-Act Academy and the UTC also ties in with the iCon centre at the other end of Eastern Way which is run by the University of Northampton.

Vehicles will enter the UTC site via the current access to the Phoenix Centre and Community Centre car park. They will leave the site at a new junction further down the hill towards Eastern Way.

This week informal student and parent drop-in sessions were held in Daventry, along with a staff recruitment information event for every role from teaching and administration through to estate and hotel services.

Further student information events are being held on Thursday, March 7 at the Coventry TA Centre from 4.30pm-8pm. Saturday, March 9 at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon from 9am to noon. And finally at Lutterworth Town Hall on Saturday March 16 from 9am to noon.
