Mums transform playground
New play area at Woodford Halse
Four mums from Woodford Halse have raised £22,000 in a year to create a better and safer park for their children.
Disappointed by the village’s rundown play area off Willow Close, which had only two swings and a slide, the mums decided to fundraise to build something more exciting.
Laura Disley said: “The park was so rubbish and children would just get bored so I used to travel to Daventry Country Park with my son.
“There wasn’t any equipment and the area in general wasn’t safe. There were mats and things the children could trip on, cracks in the equipment and dog mess.
“We have fenced the whole area off now and bought lots of new equipment.”
It includes a climbing wall, play train, fort and slide, assault course and nest swing.
The mums Emma O’Hanlon, Johanna Collins, Stephanie Hulme and Mrs Disley have held events including pamper evenings, a psychic night and a fish and chip supper to raise the cash.
They also applied for grants and received £10,200 from the National Lottery fund, £4,500 from Daventry district housing and £2,000 from the Northamptonshire Community Foundation.
Mrs Disley said: “It all happened so quickly and we didn’t really ever think we would reach our £20,000 target by just raising £100 here and £60 there but it’s been a big community effort.
“It’s amazing to see the park now and the children can’t wait to get in it.”
The last of the work is now taking place by local company Playscapes design. A grand opening on Sunday, March 31 between 12pm and 2pm.
