Men sent down for village pub glassing
A TEENAGER who smashed a pint glass into a peacemaker’s face during a mass pub brawl was sentenced to three-and-a-half year’s detention.
Robin Charlesworth, aged 19, denied he caused the injuries to Steve Cantrill but he was unanimously convicted of wounding with intent and affray at Northampton Crown Court. Mr Cantrill was at the Old King’s Head in Long Buckby on January 22 when he tried to break up fighting but was attacked himself.
Charlesworth, of Grove Farm Close, Long Buckby, used the glass to cause five facial lacerations including one close to Mr Cantrill’s eye.
Judge Richard Bray said: “The jury has found you guilty of wounding with intent, by thrusting a glass into the victim’s face. He suffered substantial cuts to his face. There has to be a substantial custodial sentence for such an offence.”
Charles Heeley, aged 30, of Green Hill Road, Long Buckby was celebrating his 30th birthday when he got involved in a fight with Charlesworth.
He pleaded guilty on the day of trial to affray and was jailed for eight months.
Judge Bray said: “This was a serious brawl in a confined space in a public house, having heard your plea and the evidence in this case, it’s clear you play a substantial role.”
Adam Conopo, aged 20, of Grasscroft, Long Buckby, was also convicted of affray and sentenced to a year’s detention. The judge said: “I’m satisfied you played a substantial role in the fighting.”
His father Simon Conopo, aged 41, also of Grasscroft, Long Buckby was convicted of two offences of intimidating Mr Cantrill and his brother Robert and was jailed for nine months. Judge Bray said: “I have no doubt there has been a considerable atmosphere in this case which has been apparent in court.
“Both victims have been affected by your conduct. I appreciate you committed these offences out of loyalty to your family but offences of this kind are all too prevalent.”
The defendants are now banned from entering the Old Kings Head under an exclusion order passed by Judge Bray until December 2013.
David Conopo, of Brington Road, Long Buckby was acquitted by the jury of perverting the course of justice by allegedly offering money to Mr Cantrill to drop the prosecution case against the Conopo defendants.
