Long Buckby trains among the most crowded

THREE of the top 10 most overcrowded trains in England and Wales run through Long Buckby, figures have revealed.

Figures from the Department of Transport released last week looking at autumn 2011 show London Midland services between London Euston and Birmingham New Street featured in the top ten three times.

The 18.13 service was found to be carrying 162 per cent of its capacity, an extra 431 passengers.

The 16.48 service carried 160 per cent or 270 extra passengers, and the 17.46 train carried 152 per cent equating to 383 extra people.

Passenger counts were taken at the busiest point on the services.

London Midland, which also has a service between Stourbridge Junction and Stratford-upon-Avon in the top 10, has placed an order for 10 new four-car trains which will allow for additional services from 2014.

Transport Minister Norman Baker said: “The operators on the list are aware of the problems on these services.

“I will be monitoring them closely and others, which have not made the top 10 list, urging train companies to reduce crowding on the busiest services.”
