Lady Godiva to pass through Daventry district

THE Highways Agency is reminding road users that as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Godiva Awakes, a six-metre-high marionette propelled by a team of cyclists, will travel from Coventry to London by road, arriving in Walthamstow, East London, on Sunday, August 5.

Parts of the journey will include travelling along, or crossing over, trunk roads managed by the Highways Agency – including the A5 between Kilsby and Weedon (Tuesday, July 31) and the A5 between Towcester and Milton Keynes (Wednesday, August 1).

Matt Pates, emergency planning manager for the Midlands said: “Everyone using our roads over the period of the Godiva Awakes and Cyclopedia journey can help us to help them by planning their journey in advance and leaving extra time, as some roads along its seven-day route to London could be busy.

“Motorists can check traffic conditions before they leave via our website at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic. Those with smartphones can get up to the minute information when parked and safe to do so using our Highways Agency travel news app or our Twitter feeds available on www.highways.gov.uk/twitter.”

Jane Hytch, director of imagineer productions [producers of Godiva] said: “Godiva is a six-metre high marionette, who will be travelling to London on her amazing Cyclopedia. She is going to be a marvellous spectacle, but we’d urge drivers to allow extra time for their journeys and pass safely if they encounter Godiva on her journey.”

Godiva and the Cyclopedia are expected to travel at an average speed of around 4mph, so road users are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and consider alternative routes where possible.
