Is scheme unfair to over 60s?
Part of a scheme which provides affordable housing in the Daventry district was questioned at a district council strategy meeting on Thursday.
Councillor Kay Driver asked the council whether the scheme, which restricts people over the age of 60 to applying for only ground floor accommodation, is really fair.
At the time, the council was discussing other changes to the DDC housing allocation scheme which underwent consultation from parish councillors and providers of affordable housing over Christmas. She said: “The over 60s are only offered ground floor accommodation which is restricting and that is a problem.”
Cllr Driver pointed out that many councillors were over 60 and were capable of using the stairs and that over 60s may feel discriminated against.
Community manager at DDC, Maria Taylor, said this was not a new part of the scheme and had been in place for a long time.
She said: “It is simply about managing the housing stock we have and deciding who takes priority for housing.”
Business manager Simon Bowers echoed this sentiment and said it was about finding the right balance for the stock.
