There was a record turnout for the Headlands estate free fun day on Saturday.

More than 800 people enjoyed the beats of an African drumming concert organised by Daventry District Housing at Spider Park.

The social landlord’s event included performances by The Rocking Troupadours and dancing from Leto at the Phoenix Youth Centre.

A magician made a magical appearance alongside the Northampton Saints’ mascot Bernie.

Young residents enjoyed nail art sessions, a children’s disco and fire dancing. They also got the chance to sign up to a new youth club being set up on Fridays by the Youth Centre.

More than 500 residents turned out for the same event in September 2010 showing an increasing popularity for the free fun event.

Jo Miller, resident involvement officer at DDH, said: “The event was a great success, and I’d like to thank everyone who attended and all our partners for their support.

“Particular thanks must go to the 15 young volunteers from the Phoenix Youth Centre whose help made a real contribution to the event’s success.”

He added that everyone seemed to enjoy themselves whilst also being able to access information about the services available in their area.

He said: “Two of our pledges to customers are to look after neighbourhoods and involve tenants, and this event gives us the chance to do both.

“We are delighted with the turnout and are already taking onboard residents’ comments when planning future events.”

The event helped raise £50 for Help for Heroes and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire air ambulance service through 20 per cent of the food van’s takings for the day.
