Historic bridges brought back to life
The site of two historic bridges near Barby village will be open to the public as restoration begins on them.
The open days will take place on September 15 and 16 and October 5 to 15 when a group of between 10 to 15 volunteers will begin work on the heritage sites.
The bridges along the Oxford Canal, Northamptonshire, are 200 year old and will be restored by a team of skilled volunteers using traditional techniques to bring the arched bridge back to life.
Bridges 79 and 80, built back in the 1770’s, are well known landmarks on the Oxford Canal.
Antonia Zotali Project Team Manager from the Canal & River Trust said “We are delighted that volunteers from the Waterway Recovery Group have agreed to help us restore these two traditional bridges. These bridges have suffered from severe wear and tear as well as movement which has resulted in some very large cracks in the brickwork so are in desperate need of attention.”
The public can go along between 1am and 1pm to see the sites.
Jenny Black from the Waterway Recovery Group said “We are really pleased that we can help restore these two bridges. This restoration is a great project and really demonstrates the work we do as a volunteer organisation.”
