FIVE men from Daventry will be walking the length of Hadrian’s Wall in a gruelling charity challenge.
Scott Bennett, Darren Rendall, Duncan Holland and Mark Smith, along with serving soldier Gareth Tucker, will be starting their three-day challenge tomorrow (Friday) to walk along the 84-mile wall.
The first day will see each member walk 30 miles in eight hours carrying a standard marine pack weighing 32 pounds.
On the second day, they will all walk 27 miles with a 55 pound pack on. Day three sees them walk for 25 miles with the 55 pound pack.
The group will then finish the final two miles by carrying a man on a stretcher simulating a casualty evacuation.
Mr Rendall said: “We are under no illusions that this will be a very tough challenge but the rigours posed by this trek in no way compare to the living standards of those currently on operations in a hostile environment.
“We are ready for the challenge and wanted to help a very good cause.”
Mr Tucker, a gunner with the 47 Regiment Royal Artillery, said he will face similar challenges on the trek when he flies out to Afghanistan later in the year.
He added: “There will be a lot of challenges like this when I go out there. My fitness levels are good but even I am worried about this challenge. I am looking forward to a pint when I get to the other end.
“We just want to make as much money for the charity as possible because it does a lot of good work for injured servicemen.
“We would like to raise around £5,000 and anything that people can give will put us nearer to our target, so please give generously.
