Headteachers criticise harsh marking

Headteachers in the Daventry area are angry and disappointed as the marking of some GCSE English papers has contributed to lower results.

Danetre and Southbrook Learning Village (DSLV) use exam board Edexcel who put pressure on the school to change grade boundaries to prevent grade inflation.

Principle at the DSLV David Howell said 14 to 20 pupils at his school had dropped a grade because of the changes,

At Campion School in Bugbrooke their exams are set by WJEC exam board who have been ordered by the government in Wales to regrade exam papers but will not be doing it for pupils in England.

Campion headteacher Bob Clayton described the move as shambolic.

Guilsborough School and the Parker E-ACT Academy have not been affected by the problem.

Director General of E-ACT Sir Bruce Liddington said: “As the academy sponsor of DSLV E-ACT Academy and the Parker E-ACT Academy we were of course extremely concerned following the marking of this year’s C/D English GCSE boundary. Our concerns remain about how the change in grade boundaries will impact unfairly on some young people in our academies, affecting their plans for future education, training and career progression.

Our academies work extremely hard with those students on a C/D borderline to ensure they achieve their academic potential and successful intervention plans, which are already in place, will continue to be rolled out to push students to achieve A*-C in English.

On behalf of our academies we remain in contact with Ministers and senior officials from the Department for Education and will be ready to contribute any evidence to any national review that may take place.”

An Ofqual spokesman said it will not be looking to re-grade any of the GCSE English papers.
