Half-term sessions offer families fresh insight into college

Families can meet the team driving forward Daventry’s University Technical College (UTC) at a series of drop-in sessions during February half-term week.

Daventry UTC principal designate David Edmondson and deputy principal Sally Kirk will be on hand to talk to potential students and their parents and answer any questions they may have on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (February 11, 12 and 13) between 10am and 1pm at the iCon Environmental Innovation Centre in Eastern Way, Daventry.

The drop-in sessions aim to provide families with more details on the unique education opportunities on offer at the UTC, which is currently being built on land off Ashby Road and will welcome its first intake of students in September this year.

The Daventry UTC will offer 14-19 year olds an innovative mix of academic studies, technical learning, employer-led design projects and work placements. Students will be able to take a range of GCSEs (and A/AS Level subjects from Year 12) alongside specialisms in the areas of engineering, modern methods of construction or environmental sustainability.

Interest is high for the 120 places available for Year 10 students this autumn and applications are now being accepted, with offers being made from March. The first Year 12 entry will be in 2014.

Principal designate David Edmondson said: “We have arranged these sessions so that families can pop by during the half-term break for an informal chat with Sally and I, to find out more about the unique learning journey the UTC can offer them.

“Alongside the larger information events that have taken place, we have also held more than 40 individual sessions with potential students and parents, who have been able to discuss their educational aspirations in more detail and learn more about how the UTC will operate and its extensive curriculum.

“I would encourage any families interested in finding out more to drop by and see us during these half-term sessions, there is no need to book an appointment.”

The Daventry UTC was one of only 13 proposals in the whole country that was approved by the Department for Education as part of the first phase of UTCs.

Parents and carers of children that will be moving into Year 10 in September 2013 can view the prospectus and apply for a place at www.daventryutc.com or call the information hotline on 0800 3582232.
