Fete and sports day to mark centenary

An afternoon of fun and entertainment from a bygone era will be coming to the Hollows Playing Field in Daventry next weekend.

There will be something for everyone at the Daventry Centenary Fete and Old Fashioned Sports Day from noon to 5pm on Saturday, August 9.

It has been organised by Everyone Active which runs Daventry Leisure Centre.

Among the entertainment will be amusements from the 1900s including a cakewalk, helter skelter, swing boats, coconut shy and test your strength.

All of the amusements cost £1.

There will be a performance from Daventry Brass Band, a Punch and Judy show, circus skills as well as musical and theatrical performances.

Children can also enter a fancy dress competition in three different categories. zero to four years, five to seven years and eight to 10 years with prizes awarded for first and second place. Registration runs from noon to 1.15pm.

A number of old fashioned family sports will also take place, including three-legged races, egg and spoon, 60 yard dash, wellie wanging and a football penalty shootout.

There will also be a tug of war competition, for which people are being encouraged to register by calling Will Heckford on 01327 871144 or emailing willheckford@everyoneactive.com.

People can also take part in a centenary companion dog show with prizes for a number of categories.

There is a wide range of stalls showcasing glassware, quilts, designer bags, jewellery and homemade cakes.

Money raised at the event will be donated to various military associated charities.
