Empty promises are cold comfort in windows row

A WOMAN says her house has been left too cold for her young son due to rotting window frames.
Stephanie Hulme lives in Sycamore Avenue, Woodford Halse, in a Bromford Housing Association home.
She said: “When I moved here in November 2008 the windows hadn’t been painted for years and a lot of them were already rotten.
“Since then I’ve been fighting to try and get them repaired. The problem is that the frames are so bad it’s hard to keep the house warm.
“I’ve got a three-year-old son. I can’t give him a bath in the evenings because the house is too cold for him when he gets out. We spend our evenings in the lounge to keep warm, but as soon as you go into another room you can feel the cold.
“They also look in a bad state from the outside – I quite often get door-to-door salesmen talking to me about them.
“I’ve had environmental health officers out who have basically said that the windows need repairing. The housing association said I was on the list to get them repaired in the last year, but nothing’s happened. All they’ve done is put up plastic on the inside of the windows to create a kind of double glazing.”
A spokesman for the Bromford Group said: “We are aware that Miss Hulme has experienced problems with her windows and have responded to complaints making a number of repairs. We have accepted that, while remedial action has been taken, the windows have now reached the end of their life and need to be replaced within a year.
“Miss Hulme’s property is on our planned window replacement programme.”

Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 06:28 PMHow do you know whether the lady works or not? The issue is that housing association keep putting the replacement off. Not only are the conditions unacceptable but I would be scared from my own safety as well. Rotten windows and doors are an ideal invitation to criminals. I wonder what would happen to a private rent landlord if he forced his tenants to live in such conditions?

Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 02:14 PMHi, I actually live in Kilmarnock, Scotland. where the council are very good when it comes to repairs for families with children, or the elderly, Stephs situation would never have gone on for so long here, especially as Jack is so often ill, I would be very interested to know when within the year these excuses for windows will be replaced by The Bromford Group.
