Electric car charging point could come to town

Daventry District Council (DDC) is set to consider whether an electric vehicle charging point should be installed in Daventry’s Lodge Road car park.

The proposal is to install the charging point to allow owners of electric cars to recharge their vehicle in a parking bay.

Electric cars run on a battery and electric motor, either with or without another petrol or diesel engine. The proposed recharge point would be used to top-up vehicles in preparation for onward journeys.

The Government are strongly encouraging the use of electric vehicles and has said that the UK needs 1.7million of them by 2020 to help meet current climate reduction targets.

Funding for the £7,200 project is being sought from a grant from Cenex, which administers the Government’s Plugged in Places (PiP) scheme in the Midlands, and proposed sponsorship from Great Central Plastics Ltd in Woodford Halse.

DDC portfolio holder for environment Daniel Cribbin said: “The proposed electric vehicle charging point is intended to further strengthen our environmental commitments that target a reduction in carbon emissions, while also giving the chance to support existing owners and encourage those who may be considering purchasing electric cars.

“Through grant funding and commercial sponsorship this initiative would not cost the Council and, if approved, its usage would be assessed after an initial three year period.”

The proposal will be considered by Daventry District Council’s strategy group on Thursday February 14.
