Driving day held as more die on roads

A motoring group is holding a free event to tackle the increasing number of fatal road accidents in Northamptonshire.

Northamptonshire Advanced Motorists (NAM) said there were almost double the number of fatal road accidents in the county in 2012 compared with the previous year; something they hope to tackle.

NAM said a lack of driver experience and training is playing an increasingly large role in the number of accidents and will be holding a free driver training event in response to this.

The group are affiliated to the UK’s leading road safety charity, the Institute of Advanced Motorists, and will be holding an event on Saturday, March 30 to help individuals become better drivers and to reach an advanced driving standard.

NAM Group Chairman John Norrie said: “The vast majority of people driving on our roads today have had no driver training.

“They have some instruction up to the point where they take the driving test. At this point they have no experience and very little road craft but are abandoned to gain experience as best they can. Driver training is synonymous with good driving.”

On the day NAM will offer ‘check drives’ where a qualified observer can accompany a member of the public on a short drive to give them guidance and advice.

They will also be offering demonstration drives, where the public can book a seat in a car with one of the Northamptonshire advanced driving examiners. During the drive the examiner will demonstrate driving techniques and give a running commentary to show what advanced driving is like.

The event will be held at the New Street car park in Daventry from 9am until 5pm. Anyone wishing to have a free driver check or seat on a demonstration can book in advance by contacting Ian Phillips on 07967 651820.
