A teenager from Daventry has been recognised for her work to raise the profile of young people after being shortlisted for a national sector award.

Robyn King, 15, joined regional finalists at the Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) Awards ceremony at the NEC in Birmingham.

As a tenant and member of the Daventry & District Housing (DDH) Youth Board, Robyn won her seat at the national finals, when she was named the Young Tenant of the Year for the central region.

Robyn, a student at Danetre and Southbrook Learning Village, has encouraged other students at her school to join the youth board and act as a voice for local young people, which has led to a better representation from the area’s two main secondary schools.

She has a particular interest in breaking down barriers between young and older people, and recently helped to organise an intergenerational day which saw youth board members join residents from DDH sheltered schemes for a trip to Sandringham.

TPAS recognises housing organisations for their work to involve tenants in decision making and shaping services.

The accolade is the second in a year for Robyn, who was awarded the under-16s Daventry and South Northants Area Young Leader of the Year 2011 by Northamptonshire Voluntary Youth Action (NVYA).

Sarah Sims, community development officer at DDH, said: “Robyn is an excellent role model for her peers and we’re immensely proud of everything she has achieved.

“Being recognised in the finals of a national awards ceremony is a huge achievement, especially for someone so young.

“We’re certain that Robyn has a bright future ahead and look forward to continuing to work with her together with the other members of the youth board in helping to raise awareness of the good work young people are doing in our area.”
