Daventry MP votes yes to gay marriage
Daventry MP Chris Heaton-Harris
CHRIS Heaton-Harris, member of parliament for Daventry, voted yes to a bill which will allow same-sex couples to marry, on Tuesday.
The MP said he supports marriage and thinks it is a good thing to allow gay people to marry too.
He said: “I know the issue is quite controversial but I am in favour of same-sex marriage.
“I believe there are enough safeguards in the bill to protect religious organisations who do not wish to carry out same-sex marriages and in fact it will remain illegal for the Church of England to perform same-sex marriages.
“For other religious organisations it is completely down to them whether they chose to perform a marriage or not.”
Mr Heaton-Harris said he believes most people in Daventry don’t mind which way the vote goes but to those who do have strong views - he has been responding in detail, outling his reason for voting.
On his blog Mr Heaton-Harris states: “Marriage binds us together, brings stability and it makes us stronger. The State should not be stopping people from marrying unless there are very good reasons and being gay, lesbian or bisexual is not one of them.”
