A Daventry man will be taking on a gruelling challenge to raise funds in memory of his late mother.

Ian Wood, who lives on Morning Star Road on the Timken estate, is riding more than 1,800 miles on his 35-year-old Ducati motorcycle.

He sets off from Jack’s Hill Cafe in Towcester on Thursday, April 17 up to John O’Groats in Scotland. He then travels down to Land’s End before returning back up to Jack’s Hill Cafe.

It is a six-day journey which will see him cover around 300 miles a day.

Ian will be raising funds for Dementia UK after his Joan Wood, 73, died suddenly at the end of last year after a long battle with the illness.

Mr Wood said: “I have never done anything like this before but it was important for me to do it now.

“It is a terrible illness and Dementia UK is a fantastic charity.

“It is on hand to help and support not just the people with dementia, but also the relatives.

“It is a great cause and one that I hope I can raise a lot of money for.

“People who are facing, or living with, dementia will know it is a very hard and long battle.

“Carers and families need as much support, advice and knowledge of the illness as possible during very difficult times.”

He has already received a lot of help from enthusiasts in the motorcycle industry.

Mr Wood said: “All of the journey has been funded by me, so 100 per cent of the funds will go to the charity.

“There are a lot of people within the motorcycling world who have offered me places to stay overnight while I am on my journey.

“It would be great to get the same level of support from the people in the local area before I set off.”

Mr Wood is hoping to raise £5,000.
