Daredevil Don takes to skies for 90th birthday

Daredevil Don Bird is taking to the skies in a Spitfire to celebrate his 90th bithday.

He wanted to do something special to mark the milestone and is appealing for people to sponsor him to help raise money for the Cynthia Spencer Hospice.

Don, who lives in Long Buckby and is a veteran volunteer at the hospice, said: “I’ll be in the air for half an hour and will travel over the hospice, as well as over my home on June 7.

“I was training to be a navigator in World War II, and if peace hadn’t been made, I would have gone into battle - perhaps in a Spitfire, Planes have always fascinated me, and now is my chance.”

He hopes to raise at least £500 from the stunt.
