Council comes near top in tax collection

Council tax payers in South Northamptonshire are getting a fair deal with the local authority coming near the top of the collection rate tables.

Figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government show South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) is shown to have collected 99.1 per cent of its council tax demand.

That figure makes SNC the joint third best collection rate in the country.

After revealing the figures to fellow members at last week’s council meeting, Cllr Ian McCord, SNC’s portfolio holder for resources, said a good collection rate not only helps protect district council services but also ensures Northamptonshire County Council and the emergency services get their portion of the council tax demand.

He added: “Just 11 councils collected 99 per cent or more, and SNC has consistently done that for many years.

“I thank all those responsible in the revenues team who ensure that we bring in as much as possible, year in, year out.

“But not only can an efficient collection service help protect frontline services, it is fairer for those who do pay as they effectively subsidise those that don’t.”
