TWO friends from Daventry will be Standing Up to Cancer by organising a competition to raise funds for charity.

Rebecca Johnson and Stella Batten, from The Grange, are arranging a competition where people can pay £5 to enter a Guy. Money raised will go to the Stand Up To Cancer appeal organised by Cancer Resaerch UK.

The cause is close to home for both of them as they have each had close family members suffer from the illness.

Mrs Johnson, 31, said: “I lost my grandfather, Joseph Beasley, to prostate cancer five years ago.

“He was my hero really and we were very close. While the rest of the family were enjoying cakes that my granny had made, I was in the tool shed with my pap. He has inspired me to organise this event.

“It is hard because there is a lot of fundraising events which are designed for breast cancer and there is nothing wrong with that because it is a very worthy cause.

“However there are lots of different types of cancers out there and the appeal about Stand Up to Cancer is that it aims to bring an end and find a cure for them all.”

Mrs Batten, 44, has been inspired to raise money since her husband was diagnosed with lymphoma and her father with prostate cancer.

She said: “I have raised money for these events before but this seemed like a fun way to raise funds and make a real difference in trying to fight cancer.”

The competition will be split into five categories which are Schools and Nurseries, Shops and Businesses, Community Groups and for Under 16s and Over 16s. The winners will be judged by the mayor of Daventry Cllr Ron Fox and displayed at the fireworks event on Eastern Way, Daventry on Saturday, November 3.

Prizes include flowers and children’s scooters.

Competition forms will be delivered to schools and businesses and are available from the Daventry Express offices.
