Former rugby star Ben Cohen visited Campion School in Bugbrooke in a bid to support a charity day hosted by Year Eight pupils.

The youngsters held the event on Wednesday last week by holding a bake sale as well as a penalty shoot-out competition.

A final total has yet to be confirmed but is likely to be in excess of £1,200 which
will be split between Cancer Research UK and the The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation set up by the former England international.

Cohen, who used to play for Northampton Saints, also posed for photographs and signed autographs for the pupils.

Sallyann Furniss, the assistant head of Year Eight, said: “The pupils got very excited and there were a lot of the pupils were looking forward to seeing him.

“There was a bit of a crowd looking out for him as he went round some of the class rooms.

“We were thrilled that he was able to come along,” she added.

The charity day is designed to give the pupils the chance to organise fundraising events.

Mrs Furniss added: “The charity days are something that every year group organises and they have to come up with the fundraising ideas and the sort of things they would like to do.

“The students also have to research and choose the charities that they want to fundraise.

“It was a really successful day and raised money for two good causes,” she said.
