FIVE ‘SMURFS’ who work in Daventry have been preparing for a mammoth 138-mile charity cycle ride.

The team, who work at the Tesco Distribution Centre in Royal Oak Way North, will be biking the breadth of Britain from Bridlington to Blackpool to support Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work.

Three of the cyclists – Pete Nixon, Steve Cook and Dave Kellett – live in Daventry, while Peter Woodfield and Darryl Morrison are from Rugby.

Wearing Smurf outfits and blue facepaint, the team will set off from Bridlington Pier on Friday, September 28 at 7am, hopefully reaching Blackpool on the Sunday evening.

Together they hope to raise £1,000 for Cancer Research UK, Tesco’s charity of the year.

Dave Kellett said: “We are not the fittest bunch of people generally and we all have various levels of experience when it comes to cycling, but we are all determined to complete this huge challenge, motivated by a truly inspiring trip we had to a Cancer Research lab at Birmingham University.

“It is a long way to cycle, especially dressed as a Smurf, but we hope that lots of people along the way will get into the spirit, cheer us along, and contribute to our fundraising target.”
