Clean up duty for WI ladies

The litter-pick was organised as part of the nationwide ‘Clean for the Queen’ campaign in the year the Queen turns 90.

Within an hour, the ladies had filled 15 bags of rubbish and cleared almost 40 glass bottles from the verges.

The group’s president Carol Halsey said: “We are offended by the habit of people thoughtlessly discarding their rubbish and I wish to thank all the ladies who gave up their Saturday morning to ‘clean for the Queen’.”

Newnham WI is 97 years old and has its own premises, the WI hut in Dean Road.

The group has 28 members and meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the hut at 7.30pm.

This month’s meeting will be next week (April 12), with Fiona Warin giving a talk entitled ‘Land Girls’.

There will also be a head scarf competition.

Next month, the theme will be ‘Resolutions’ and there will be a pudding quiz and the competition will be ‘bloom of the month’.
