Changes to waste collections, including emptying black bins once every three weeks, go before Daventry District Council

Controversial plans for a three weekly collection of non-recyclable waste will be discussed by councillors again tonight (Thursday).

The issue is on the agenda for tonight’s full meeting of Daventry District Council.

The proposed 1-2-3 collection cycle is recommended to form the basis for the council’s contract renewal process, to replace the current scheme in 2018.

The 1-2-3 regime was backed by members of the council’s strategy group, and now needs to pass a vote of the full council in order for it to continue.

The 1-2-3 service proposes (1) a weekly food waste collection, (2) a two-weekly recycling collection using a full-size compartmentalised wheelie bin rather than the current boxes and (3) a three-weekly general waste collection.

It is also being proposed that a separate garden waste collection service will also be made available at an additional cost for those who want it.

The council says entering a new contract with the same service as households currently receive would require an extra £1.25 million per year in costs, due to the lower prices being paid for recycled materials.
