A new lease that will allow Daventry indoor bowling to create a new outdoor facility was approved on Thursday, March 28.

The lease is to be offered by Daventry District Council for 25 years at a peppercorn rent to create a facility next to the club’s existing indoor one at Browns Road, Daventry.

Director of the indoor sports club, Michael Robins, would welcome the lease.

He said: “I think it would be a good thing and a new facility would extend our resources and the season all year round.

“The indoor club has big plans to become a centre of excellence for bowls and to encourage younger people and those with disabilities to try out the sport. So with the council’s backing and a new ground we could widen the sport out across the board and it would be a great benefit to the people of Daventry.”

DDC culture and leisure portfolio holder, Cllr Alan Hills, said: “I hope the club will be able to move forward with their plan further engage people with bowls and I think being able to offer both indoor and door facilities at the same site will make this more viable.”

The lease was recommended for approval by DDC strategy group last week on
the basis that the club secures sufficient funds and implement the proposed outdoor facility.

Negotiations with the club are ongoing but the DDC recommendation intends to allow the club a three year lease in which to seek funding
and to construct the new facility.

The recommendation will go before the full DDC council in a meeting tonight.
