Braunston Marina’s historic narrowboat rally and canal festival attracted around 5,000 visitors last weekend.

The popular annual event is one of the highlights in the calendar for canal boat enthusiasts, who came to see more than 60 historic working boats gather and take part in parades.

Among the other entertainments and activities on offer were live music, Morris dancing, theatrical presentations, an open-air Songs of Praise church service and stalls from canal societies, traders and exhibitors including the Guild of Waterway Artists. The rally was officially opened by actors Timothy West and Prunella Scales, who are both keen narrowboaters.

Tim Coghlan, owner of Braunston Marina, said: “We held the first festival in 2003 and it’s still the biggest event of its kind in the UK.

“Narrowboats on show this year included a rally of surviving Braunston and Union Canal boats. Despite the rain on Saturday, I think we can safely say a good time was had by all.”

All profits from the event go to canal and local causes.
