Alcohol tests to combat underage drinking
POLICE in the Daventry area have a new piece of equipment to help identify if young people are drinking alcohol.
Officers have been given alcohol test strips which can be dipped into drinks and will change colour if they contain alcohol.
Licensing constable Tam Dunn said: "Often police suspect young people who are gathering in groups are drinking but have no way of checking what is really in their soft drinks.
"These strips give us a quick and easy way of finding out whether they are really drinking alcohol and disposing of it if they are.
"There is no doubt that underage drinking is linked to criminal damage and other anti-social behaviour, and Northamptonshire Police are committed to working together with our partners to tackle this issue every way we can."
In December the strips were used to show a tonic bottle being used by a 16 year old boy contained alcohol, which was then poured away. Police have written to the boy's parents.
The strips will be used by patrols in Daventry and villages and were funded by the Daventry and South Northamptonshire Safer Stronger Partnership.
