Action at last for ‘dangerous’ road

Safety measures will finally be introduced on Daventry’s Ashby Road after the whole stretch was identified as being potentially dangerous to drivers and pedestrians.

The road, formerly the old northern route out of the town, now carries traffic to estates, shops, schools and community centres.

On Friday last week Northamptonshire County Council highways, the Road Safety Team, and police met with Daventry West county councillor Chris Long.

At the meeting the highways department recognised the road had problems with speeding and road safety along its entire length – rather than just between the outdoor pool and community centre.

However, questions were raised about why money hadnot been secured from developers for the road.

Cllr Long said: “We have waited a long time for highways to admit a problem exists. Agreed initial actions are encouraging, but I will keep in regular contact to ensure they are delivered.

“I will also be asking questions of NCC and DDC about why funding for these measures was not secured from recent developments, leaving the taxpayer to pick up the bill.

Motorist Faye Lambell said: “Cars simply go too fast. The only way to slow them down would be speed bumps and traffic lights.”

Sean Wheeler said: “I have had umpteen near misses when crossing the road, even on the zebra crossings. Some drivers clearly have no idea that they have to stop for pedestrians at the zebra crossings.

“It really is taking your life in your hands when you try to get across. It’s not like crossing a 30mph road, it’s like crossing a main road.”
