£80,000 grant for Daventry Rugby Club

Daventry's rugby club will get new changing rooms after receiving a £80,000 to maintain the growth of the sport following last year's world cup.

Rugby union in Daventry received a major boost when Daventry Rugby Football Club was chosen by the RFU to become a ‘Legacy Centre’ and provide a base for the continued growth of the sport.

Daventry RFC will receive a grant of £80,000 to build new changing facilities and strengthen the partnership with the RFU. The grant will enhance the club’s facilities and provide a resource for use by the local community.

The England 2015 Rugby World Cup saw an increase in interest and participation in the sport, and as a legacy of the event there is a focus on maintaining the growth in the sport.

Club vice-chairman, Paul Russell, said: “We are delighted that our project has won approval following its original identification by East Midlands RFU. We will now have some of the best facilities in the area that local people from the town and surrounding villages can use during the week.

“England 2015 inspired a new wave of people of all ages to become involved in rugby and this RFU investment will help our club to be even better equipped to welcome the newcomers.”

Chairman of Daventry and District Sports Club Mervyn Bull said: “This investment by the RFU is excellent news. The Daventry Rugby Club has an enthusiastic group of hard-working volunteers and this funding will enable them to do even more for young people in the community in the future.”

RFU area facilities manager Peter Shaw said: “The new facilities will improve the quality of the rugby experience for everyone using the site and provide more playing opportunities, especially for people aged 14 to 24.

“This investment will also support the club’s financial sustainability and will create a lasting legacy for rugby in the community. The changing room development will help the club raise its profile and encourage more players, volunteers and spectators to share the special values that distinguish the sport.”
