TO MARK the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, Women’s Institutes across the area are taking part in a symbolic baton relay.

A silver baton is making its way around the county’s 126 WI groups.

Having started its journey in February, the tour ends at Holdenby House on June 21.

On Tuesday last week Chipping Warden WI proudly received the baton from Chacombe, before handing it on to the Aston-Le-Walls branch the next day.

Chipping Warden WI treasurer Inez Robertson said: “The ladies from Chacombe came to us in a car decorated with red, white and blue balloons and joined us for cream tea afterwards.

“We took the baton to Aston-Le-Walls in a tractor owned by one of our member’s husbands. We might have got a few funny looks but everyone enjoyed themselves!”

On Friday, Boddington WI passed the baton onto Byfield WI.

Byfield organised a coffee morning to welcome the baton.

The following morning it was passed on to Woodford Halse WI

On Tuesday Newnham WI decided to transport the baton in style to Weedon WI, using a vintage tractor for the event.
