AN ARTIST from Welton has won first prize in an open exhibition held in Rugby.

Cllr Gwen Hotten, Mayor of Rugby, presented Jacqueline Read-Szymcyzk with her prize of £1,000 towards the production of an exhibition in Floor One Gallery next year, at a special event at Rugby Art Gallery and Museum.

Jacqueline said: “Winning the first prize is a wonderful inspiration for me to continue exploring and creating.

“I am excited about preparing for my show next year in this lovely exhibition space.”

The winning piece is called The Tao of the Sea and the Wind.

Gallery visitors cast their votes for their favourite work in the Rugby Open during the first two weeks of the exhibition, and this year Louis Vella’s charcoal work ‘no-bar in black and white’ proved the visitors’ favourite.

The Rugby Open 2011 exhibition continues and Jacqueline’s winning work can be seen at the gallery until Saturday, December 31. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday each week excluding 25th-28th.
