Group has murder in mind

AN UNUSUAL murder mystery filled with suspense and laughter will be brought to life by an am-dram group next month.

Murder in Play is written by Simon Brett, a prolific writer of murder mysteries, and tells the story of a low-budget production by Boris Smolensky called Murder at Priorswell Manor. But things do not go well for the theatrical group when one of the cast is murdered on stage.

There will be laughter and red herrings in this tale, performed by West Haddon Players.

Producer Lesley Roberts said: “We chose to do this play because it was a lot of fun when we first read it. Because it had been so much fun, I offered to produce it.

“There has been a lot of fun at rehearsals. There are many actors playing many parts with some performers taking up to three roles.

The group has been rehearsing the show for the past three months and Lesley hopes it will be a fun night that will keep the audience guessing to the very end.

She added: “I hope it will give people a night off from their troubles. There is a lot of doom and gloom with the current economic problems so I hope people will come out for a cheap night and have a laugh.”

The West Haddon Players have been going since 1978 and this will be the 90th show members have brought to the stage.

Like their previous production, Aladdin, money from the show will be donated to The Eye Fund, which helps with counselling and supporting people who have lost their eyesight.

The group already has provisional plans for a show in the autumn and will be doing another pantomime in the new year.

New members are also being sought for the group, which meets for rehearsals on Monday and Wednesday at 7.30pm at various venues in the village.

Lesley said: “We would be happy to welcome new members. These people often bring new ideas and challenges.”

Murder in Play will be performed at West Haddon village hall from Thursday, May 7 to Saturday, May 9 at 7.30pm. Tickets, costing 7 for adults and 5 for students and OAPs, are available from the box office on 01327 843341.

Anyone wishing to join the group, can contact Charles Porter, chairman, on 01788 510503.
