Daventry Working Men’s Club officials have pledged to move the club forward after its former secretary was jailed for stealing from their funds.

John Buckley ,67, from Inlands Close in Daventry was given a two-year prison sentence after he appeared at Northampton Crown Court on Thursday last week. He had earlier pleaded guilty to stealing more than £135,000 from the club.

The current secretary, Sadie Taylor has reacted to the sentencing saying: “I don’t think the sentence was long enough and many of the members don’t think so either.

“The judge talked about the impact this case has had on his family, but it’s had a massive impact on this club and its members. It is their money that he has taken.

“A lot of clubs similar to ours have a tough time and this has definitely not helped us. In two years’ time, we could be really struggling, but we hope it will not mean closure.

“I will be working hard for the members of this club. We will look to move it forward and I hope the members will support us.”
