FIREFIGHTERS in the district are on strike today to appose Government proposed changes to their pensions.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) announced further strike action will take place tomorrow (Friday) from 6.30pm to 11pm, and on Monday from 6am to 8am.

Full and retained crews at Daventry Fire Station will be taking part, as will retained crews at fire stations in the villages around the Daventry area.

The strikes are over Government proposals to change pension and working conditions, which the FBU said could mean frontline firefighters being forced to work until they are in their 60s.

A strike was held at the end of September, and another one was planned for October, but was cancelled after talks between the union and Government.

Northants Fire and Rescue chief fire officer, Martyn Emberson, said: “We are disappointed that further industrial action is planned, but we are fully prepared and our contingency plans have been tested thoroughly to ensure we can maintain an emergency response.”
