Families are being invited to take part in one of the bedtime reading sessions taking place at Northamptonshire libraries this half-term as part of the Take 10 pledge campaign.

Take 10 encourages parents to sign up to spend 10 minutes every day reading with their child in a bid to boost the reading skills of primary school age children in the county.

The bedtime reading sessions are free and children are encouraged to wear their pyjamas and bring along their favourite cuddly toy for the storytime event.

Cllr Robin Brown, county council cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, said: “These fantastic free events are a great opportunity for parents to see how reading with their child at bedtime can be a lovely thing to do together.

“Reading aloud with your son or daughter is a wonderful bonding experience while also helping to develop their listening and language skills.

“These events are also a great way for us to encourage even more parents to take the Take 10 pledge and commit to spending 10 minutes every day reading with their child.”

The Take 10 pledge was launched in September as part of the nationwide Just Read campaign, which aims to promote reading after research revealed one in four children aged 11 is leaving primary school unable to read well.

Take 10 is being backed by best-selling Northamptonshire children’s author Julia Jarman, who has written over 60 books for young readers.

Julia said: “There is no better way to enhance the life chances of the boy or girl in your life than by spending 10 minutes a day reading with them. Sharing a book brings you closer together and takes you to faraway realms. Reading is magic and I wish Northamptonshire libraries the best of luck with this campaign.”

Bedtime reading events are taking place at all 36 libraries this half-term. To find out more about these events please ask at your local library or visit www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/kidsevents
