Fallen Angels - Royal, Northampton - Review by Amanda Chalmers
Jenny Seagrove and Sara Crowe star as best friends Julia and Jane, in a heavenly new production of Noël Coward’s divine comedy classic.
With their passionless husbands away playing golf, a mutual long-ago-lover announces his intention to pay Julia and Jane an impromptu visit. All in a fluster, there’s clearly only one thing to do: hit the bottle! Or rather, pop open the Champagne!
As each successive glass of liquid courage is imbibed, tongues start to loosen, hidden jealousies surface, the claws come out, and all attempts at demure behaviour go out the window.
But it’s not until the unexpected early return of their golfing husbands that the women’s evening really hits its frenzied peak.
Jenny Seagrove and Sara Crowe cope admirably in roles that demand almost a constant on-stage presence for nearly two hours. A good chemistry combines well with the slick action and clever comedy timing from the pair whose drunken stumblings and bumblings are a cleverly honed. A delight for Noel Coward fans, it’s the perfect antedote for the miserable weather outside. Fallen Angels plays at the Royal until Saturday.
