POLICE are raising the issue of excessive drinking in a special awareness week.
Heavy drinking of alcohol is linked to 50 percent of violent crime and one in four child abuse cases are carried out by people under the influence of alcohol.
Throughout this week officers have been using the internet to tweet about alcohol-related incidents and encouraging people to think about the harm alcohol can cause to their community. Police are also encouraging people to give up drinking for a month.
Adam Simmonds, the Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Drink-related incidents are a huge drain on police resources, and cost Northamptonshire Police nearly £1.5 million every year. I support any move which encourages debate about it.”
