THOUSANDS of mugs and bookmarks are to be presented to every school child in Daventry to mark the Diamond Jubilee.

Daventry Town Council has decided to mark the occasion by handing out the commemorative souvenirs to all pupils at the town’s schools.

The council has ordered 2,124 mugs for pupils of the town’s infant, junior and primary schools, plus 1,000 bookmarks for students at the two secondary schools.

Deborah Jewell, clerk of the council, said: “When we discussed this several months ago there was no big event planned in Daventry to mark the jubilee – now there is the big picnic at the Coutnry Park of course.

“The town councillors felt that we needed to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee in some form.

“The idea was put forward as a good way to mark it, involving the town’s children, and giving them something to remember it by in years to come.”

Daventry’s new mayor Ron Fox and the leader of the town council Cllr Steve Tubb will be heading out to schools in the coming days to do the presentations.

First on the list was The Grange School, who were given theirs yesterday (Wednesday).

Handing out mugs to mark the jubilee is not confined to just Daventry – both Everdon and Eydon villages are planning similar schemes.
