YOUNGSTERS have been learning the value of money at a town primary school.
The children at St James Infants are given a budget to buy their own stationery and equipment at the school shop at the start of each term.
Year Two teacher Steve Morris came up with the idea and said: “We have a bulldog mascot at the school called Spencer and so we have created Spencer’s Shop.
“What we do at the start of each term is ask the children what they would like to study to give them more responsibility.
“We then ask them what they need to study these things such as paper, pens etc.
“We get a list together and give the children some money and they then go and buy the items from the shop.
“They must then look after the items. It’s so the children understand that things cost money and so they think about things before spending any.
“Children throughout the school do it and they really enjoy it. They definitely seem to look after things more once they have bought them.”
