A YOUNG man on leave from the navy was convinced by his mother to take a friend’s daughter on a blind date.
But it was the start of something very special for Ted and Jean Batchelor of Greenhill Court, Long Buckby who today (Thursday) celebrate 60 years of marriage.
The couple met in London and Mrs Batchelor said: “I really wanted to make another man jealous by going on this date, but we spent the evening together and never looked back.”
After just six months the couple were engaged in June and married on December 29, 1951.
Following numerous cross country moves, and a second stint in Spain, the couple eventually moved to Long Buckby four years ago, to once again be closer to home and their ever-growing family.
When asked about the secret of their long lasting marriage Mr Batchelor jokingly replied: “Doing what I’m told.”
Mrs Batchelor added: “Being in love and talking to each other, that’s the real secret.”
The couple plan to celebrate the occasion early in the new year, along with their two children, six grandchildren, and they also hope to meet the newest addition to their family, their third great grandchild Erin.
