A Deputy Principal has been appointed at Daventry’s new University Technical College which is currently being built off Ashby Road in the town.

Sally Kirk will take up the position of ‘Deputy Principal Curriculum and Quality’ in January 2013, and will be based at the iCon Centre in Eastern Way until work on the UTC has finished.

It follows the appointment earlier this year of David Edmondson as Principal Designate as the UTC’s management team begins to take shape before welcoming the first intake of students in September 2013.

Mrs Kirk, 41, is currently Assistant Head, Director of learning and Achievement for KS4 at Myton School in Warwick and was previously Head of Science at Chipping Norton School.

She has a BSc (Hons) Biology from University College London, and a PGCE and MSc in Professional Development in Education from Oxford University.

Mrs Kirk said: “I am delighted to be joining the Daventry UTC team. This is a very exciting opportunity to be able to shape the development of an innovative facility from the outset.

“I am looking forward to developing a curriculum which will provide our learners with a rich blend of high quality core and vocational experiences and develop young people who have the skills and dispositions to enter the world of work as successful and well-rounded individuals.”

The UTC will specialise in a vocational curriculum in sustainable and related new technologies, alongside the core GCSE subjects of English, maths, science and a wide range of sport and enrichment activities.

Chris Moody, chair of the UTC Board of Governors said: “We are delighted to have appointed Sally as Deputy Principal of the new UTC and look forward to her supporting the Principal to provide a high-quality teaching environment in a centre of educational excellence.”

The Daventry UTC was one of only 13 proposals in the whole country that was approved by the Department for Education as part of the first phase of UTCs.

Parents and carers of children that will be moving into Year 10 in September 2013 can apply for a place at www.daventryutc.com. The first Year 12 entry will be in 2014.

Daventry UTC is also hosting a series of events for parents, carers and students. Full event details are available on the website.
