Two women from Daventry have admitted to fraudulently claiming thousands of pounds in benefits in separate cases this month.

Charlotte Seaney, of Ericsson Close in Daventry, failed to declare that she was living with James Stoddard as husband and wife from February 2011 to October 2011.

The 26-year-old admitted to fraudulently claiming £6,109 in employment support allowance, and housing and council tax benefit over the period.

On Monday, December 3, at Northampton Magistrates Court, Seaney was sentenced to a six month community order and had an eight week curfew imposed for between the hours of 8pm and 6am. She was also ordered to pay costs of £100 and will have to repay all the money she wrongly claimed.

Dawn Cole, 56, of William Terrace, Daventry, fraudulently claimed £7,608 in income support, council tax benefit and housing benefit over a period between June 2007 and January 2012.

Cole had failed to declare that she had money in a bank account over the prescribed limits when she made the claims, and pleaded guilty to the offences.

At Northampton Magistrates Court on Tuesday, December 4, she was sentenced to a 13 week suspended prison sentence and an 18 month community supervision order. She was also ordered to pay £85 in costs and will also have to repay the money she fraudulently claimed.

Both cases were brought following joint investigations by Daventry District Council and the Department for Works and Pensions.

Councillor Ken Melling, Portfolio Holder for Resources at Daventry District Council, said: “Both these fraud cases have been dealt with in quick succession and are very similar in that both women failed to declare a change of circumstances, which led to fraudulent benefit claims.

“The cases should serve as a reminder to people to make sure that they give us the correct information whenever their circumstances change, and also as a warning to benefit cheats that will find them, and we will bring them to justice.”
