Dad’s big climb to help charity
A DAD has set his sights on reaching one of the world’s highest peaks to help raise thousands of pounds for charity.
Graham Kennedy, 44, will aim to climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in March to raise funds for Northamptonshire-based charity Autism Concern.
Mr Kennedy, from Sidney Road in Woodford Halse, was inspired to back the charity after seeing his eight-year-old stepson Sam suffer with autism.
The father-of-five said: “We use Autism Concern’s services for Sam from time to time so I thought I’d like to give something back.
“I try and do something a bit stupid every year. I’ve done a coast to coast cycle ride and 600-mile walk for cancer charities and also did a sky dive a few years ago, so the mountain climb just appealed to me.
Mr Kennedy is now doing as much training as possible to try and get in tip-top condition for the 5,895 metre climb in Tanzania, Africa.
He has set a minimum fundraising target of £3,000 but is hoping the donations will keep flooding in.
He added: “Sam is well known around the village so we’ve had good support so far. I’ve set a target of £3,000 but if I can get more that would be great. I’ve got £2,370 so far so fingers crossed.
“I do quite a lot of walking anyway and I’ve been training for three months now. I’ve lost 20lbs in weight but you can’t replicate the altitude. I’ve been up Snowdon and Ben Nevis to get some miles under my belt so hopefully I’ll be okay.
